Soothing Sounds For Baby: A LuvSound Sampler
Luvsound / MP3 / 2010
A group of electronic musicians has put together an incredible (and free to
download) compilation of music intended as appropriate for the mix of quietude
and gurgling playfulness that one might associate with a babyÕs first experiences
of life. The projectÕs production unfolded entirely unbeknownst to me, until the
day before its release, when Erik Schoster, who makes music as He Can Jog, wrote
to inform me of what he and his musician buddies had been up to. to explore spacey
zones that are more ethereal than they are earthy.

A Hymn to Zoltan Abbassid
Luvsound / MP3 / 2006
In his effort to expand upon the tuba's harmonic range, musician Benjamin
Klein has paired it with a laptop, using electronic mediation to plumb the
deep end as have few others before him. The result is A Hymn to Zoltan
Abbassid, on the Luv Sound netlabel (luvsound.org). A rumbling, ruminative
piece (MP3), it's a single track that in nearly 25 minutes (or nearly 34
megabytes) moves from the sort of didgeridoo aura inherent in such a project
to a sound far too buried in its own resonance to be comparable to anything
but itself. And don't imagine that this digitally enhanced tuba is merely
an excercise in depth for depth's sake. Klein is just as pleased to explore
spacey zones that are more ethereal than they are earthy.

ICELU's music lies somewhere between the vague orbits of european free
Nopiano is a growing collective comprised of musicians, artists, and improvisers.

improvisation, dada, and ambient microsound. Catchy categories aside, the
golden brown bake of the midwest is what really makes this music special to
me. There's a playful seriousness to ICELU that seems indebted to their
Wisconsin dispositions - harsh noise can be giggled away, and impossibly
fragile soundscapes feel like a familiar handshake. This isn't music for the
recital hall. It's music for armchairs, couches, and new friends.

No Piano
The No Piano Ensemble / CD / 2004
Because of this Nopiano does not write, compose, or perform songs or compositions
in any traditional way. Improvisations, jam sessions, lyrics, arranging, all play
a part in the creation of songs but do not directly affect or shape the songs
themselves. In much the same way that a theater company uses improvisation as a
stimulus for its actors or that a filmmaker captures slices of reality to later edit
into the film - No Piano gathers sounds - and molds and sculpts them into music.
